HVAC & Air Conditioning Questions
-
A few factors point toward replacement: your system is more than 10 to 12 years old, the repair cost is more than half the price of a new system, your energy bills have been climbing steadily, or your system uses outdated refrigerant. We'll walk you through a clear, honest comparison of both options no pressure either way.
re than half the price of a new system, your energy bills have been climbing steadily, or your system uses R-22 or older refrigerant that is no longer produced. We will walk you through a clear comparison of both options with no pressure either way so you can make the decision that actually makes sense for your situation. -
It depends on what's actually wrong. A failed capacitor, a refrigerant recharge, and a compressor replacement are three very different jobs with very different price tags. We come out, diagnose accurately, and give you a clear written price before we do any work. You will never get a vague estimate or a surprise invoice from Custom Cooling.
-
Several things can cause this: low refrigerant from a leak, a dirty or blocked condenser coil, a failing compressor, a clogged air filter, or a system that's not properly sized for your home. The only way to know for sure is a proper diagnosis. We come out, find the actual cause, and explain it clearly before recommending any repairs
-
Different noises mean different things. Banging or clanking often signals a loose or broken part. Hissing can indicate a refrigerant leak. Squealing is often a belt or motor bearing. Constant clicking may signal a relay problem. If your AC is making a sound it didn't used to make, call us and we'll take a look.
-
Every 30 to 60 days is a good rule of thumb for standard 1-inch filters especially in DFW where dust and pollen are constant. If you have pets or anyone with allergies, lean toward 30 days. A clogged filter makes your system work harder, raises your energy bill, and shortens equipment life.
-
Bigger isn't always better. An oversized unit cools too quickly without removing humidity, leaving the air feeling cold and clammy. An undersized unit runs constantly and never keeps up. Proper sizing requires a load calculation based on square footage, insulation, windows, and other factors. We do this right before recommending any equipment.
-
Most residential AC installations are completed in a single day. We'll give you a realistic timeline when we schedule your service. We don't leave jobs half-finished.
Heating Questions
-
Key factors include the age of your furnace, the cost of the repair compared to replacement, and how efficiently the system has been running. If your furnace is over 15 years old and the repair costs more than half the price of a new system, replacement usually makes more financial sense. We'll give you a straight comparison of both options.
-
Uneven heating is usually caused by a dirty air filter restricting airflow, blocked or closed vents, ductwork leaks, an improperly sized system, or a failing blower motor. We diagnose the actual cause and explain what it will take to fix it before doing any work.
-
A loud bang when your furnace kicks on is often caused by delayed ignition gas builds up before it lights. This is not something to ignore. It can damage your heat exchanger over time and is a safety concern. If your furnace is making unfamiliar noises, call us.
-
Once a year before heating season is the standard recommendation. A fall tune-up ensures your system is ready before the first cold snap and catches small issues before they become expensive repairs. Custom Cooling's Annual Maintenance Agreement includes a fall heating tune-up and a spring AC tune-up both handled automatically.
Roofing Questions
-
Yes. If you suspect storm damage, have a leak, or just want to know the condition of your roof, we'll come out and give you an honest, thorough inspection at no charge. We tell you what needs attention now and what can wait. No obligation to move forward.
-
Roof damage isn't always visible from the ground. Watch for: missing or curling shingles, granules collecting in gutters or on the ground, dents on gutters or outdoor HVAC units from hail, water stains on your ceiling, or daylight visible in your attic. If you've been through a hail storm or high winds in DFW, don't wait. Call us for a free inspection.
-
It depends on the extent of damage, the age of your roof, and the material. Minor storm damage or a few missing shingles can often be repaired. But if your roof is 20+ years old, has widespread damage, or has had repeated repairs, replacement is usually the smarter investment. We give you an honest assessment and show you exactly what we found before making any recommendation.
-
Most residential roof replacements are completed in a single day. Larger or more complex roofs may take longer. We give you a clear timeline before we start and don't leave jobs half-finished.
-
Yes. We help DFW homeowners navigate the insurance claims process for storm-related roof damage. We document the damage thoroughly and work with your interests in mind not the insurance company's. Contact us right after a storm so we can assess before you file.
-
No. Small leaks become big problems quickly. Water finds the path of least resistance, and a minor drip can quietly cause structural damage, mold growth, and insulation issues long before you notice it inside. If you suspect a leak, call us for a free inspection. Catching it early is always cheaper.

It's a fair question. Quotes vary because of the quality of equipment being used, how thoroughly the problem was actually diagnosed, what's included in the scope of work, and whether the contractor is being straight with you. A low quote can mean cheaper materials, a rushed diagnosis, or work that doesn't address the root problem. We give you a clear breakdown of exactly what we're recommending and why so you can compare honestly.
